GWAR's 'Gross' Concert Fluids Clean Up 'Real Easy'

March 7, 2005

Hearne Christopher Jr. of The Kansas City Star reports: Just how messy was that recent GWAR concert at the Beaumont Club in Westport? You know the band that dresses up like over-the-top sci-fi movie monsters and spews simulated blood and other variously gross fluids on its heavy metal music-loving fans.

"It wasn't really all that bad," says Beaumont cleanup specialist Bill Nigro. "The kids all crowded up front, so the people who wanted to get sticky got sticky. The first time I saw them spew stuff onto the crowd, some people backed up, but the people behind them pushed forward trying to get under it."

The good news: "It cleaned up real easy," Nigro says. "Whatever they used, I think it was water-based."

To Nigro it was more about costumes than the music or the mess.

"I thought the costumes were really neat," Nigro says. "I'm sure all the people who were there on drugs had an incredible time. The costumes were just so bizarre. One guy was like a super, giant robot that was really shiny, and his head spun around and it kind of almost danced to the music, more or less. And the lead singer was in some samurai outfit with a mask. He was like singing to the music and swinging this super, giant sword at the robot. I didn't like the music, but I liked the visuals."
